Netherlands: huge joint will see in new year for dutch

Around 3,000 members of the Dutch Federation of Cannabis Consumers say they plan to
see in the new millennium with a metre-long joint.

The VEC has organised the smoke-in to protest what it calls the Dutch justice department's
intention to dissolve the association.

But police say they won't let the smokers light up since they will have other priorities
on the night before the year 2000.

Since 1998, Dutch law in theory no longer allows possession of more than five grams
(0.18 ounces) of marijuana or hashish, as opposed to 30 grams previously.
